CREATIVE PRACTICE

I’m currently keeping a weekly video journal of my creative practice for 12 weeks while I do the Artist’s Way process.  (in reverse cronological order)

WEEK 2: MAKING A BOOTLEG NIN AD FOR LURCH ZINE

This week I made a last-minute submission to a zine here in Portland called Lurch. The theme for this issue is "bite" and it made me think of some bootleg album art I made for fun, for the NiN album "with teeth."
So I dug it out from an external hard drive and expanded it into a bootleg magazine ad for a NIN world tour.

I've been inspired lately by a buddy's project called Deadstock Design Drop where he digs up fairly obscure video game ads from the late 90's early 2000's and makes t-shirts out of them. Anyway watch the video and see how I did some of the actual design. I also applied the graphic as a pattern to a skateboard, which I thought turned out pretty rad.

WEEK 1: SCREEN PRINTING SKATEBOARDS

This week was a mellow one as I was experiencing heavy burnout the week before—I just tried to make a little headway with this project of screen printing skateboards. I'm not very handy, so making a jig/setup to print boards at home has been a pain in the ass, and I've just been chipping away at it when I can.

I’ve actually already printed a couple boards some months ago, but the jig and screens I was using then were hanging on by a thread and finally kind of fell apart.

Maybe I’ll do a process video at some point about the whole adventure, but for now I just want to make my weekly journal entry.

WEEK “0”: SETTING THE CONTAINER

To start out 2025, I'm documenting 12 weeks of my creative practice as I start a new round of the Artist's Way.

This first video is just to set the container/intention: to create a new graphic every week that applies to the realm of skateboarding, music, or related culture (I guess, just something in that realm).

Last year I did a weekly art practice like this where I designed 2 board graphics a week for one term at school, and put it together in this booklet.

I felt like that was a solid practice and direction for my design work, and I’m kind of coming back to it a year leater and realizing I want to get back in that groove because what I really want to do is design board graphics and participate in the skate world through art.
