NEW WORLD MAGAZINE

DES 300: Digital Page Design II
Editorial/Page Layout

I Created a magazine concept showcasing creative visionaries who are building the world they want to live in and leaving a path for those behind them.

PROCESS

Research: Magazine Analysis

Detailed analysis of existing magazine layouts from Carhartt WIP Magazine and Cult Classic Magazine with attention to grid, margins/gutters, type specs, color & rythm.

Research: Inspiration Gathering

I compiled inspiration from some of my favorite print periodicals, sorted by content type (cover, interviews, table of contents, etc.)

Pitch Deck

The idea here was that we (students in DES 300) were pitching the concept for our magazine (before actually designing anything for the magazine itself).

Round 1: Gathering Content & Sketching

I rounded up the articles I wanted to used, began editing them, and sketeched out layout ideas for my first draft.  The structure of what kind of content is needed (e.g. 1 page column, 4 page feature article, etc.) and which page/spread everything goes on was dictated by the professor.

3 mini articles
First Push: The Blossoming Skateboarding Scene in Pakistan (originally published on the Skateism website November 2022) [skate]

Dragon’s Eye Recordings Cuts a Unique Path Through Experimental Music (first published on Bandcamp Daily 2/6/2023) [music]

Adam Zhu is documenting a new era of downtown New York youth culture
(Originally published in i-d 2/6/23)[culture]

1 page column
Jeshi: “I hate the term conscious rap” (originally published in crack magazine website 7/28/22 https://crackmagazine.net/article/aesthetic/jeshi/) [music]

Feature
Iddris Sandu: 2020 Vision (originally published in Cult Classic issue 4) [tech]

My Choice spread
Bottom Feeder: Staying True to Yourself (Originally published in Skateism issue 8) [skate]

Round 2: Type Study

[NOTE: To be honest, I really didn’t use these type studies in the finished product, or any of the drafts really.  With editorial design and layout in general, I find it doesn’t work well for me to try to choose typefaces in a vacuum: I’m much more succesful when I have some kind of imagery to inform the tone of the type.  But I did use the type mood board to inform my decisions later.]

Round 4: Draft of Full, Imposed Magazine

This was the first time I saw the spreads printed and in order at full scale.  I always print out a draft of print projects before the final because it helps me gauge the scale of type and other elements.

I compared glossy to matte paper and decided to go with glossy, as most magazines are.
